Dressing Professionally

The attire of professionals has changed drastically over the years. For example, in 2008 if you were in banking, you would have been taught that women should wear pantyhose. The good news is that pantyhose is no longer required, but professional attire today has become very casual.

Attire tends to be based on the industry and service being provided by the company. Other factors may include the city’s vibe and current fashion trends. Someone not interacting with clients may be more casual than someone that interacts with clients. The business attire in New York tends to be more business professional than in a city such as New Orleans. Also, some trends such as a linen suit is very casual compared to a wool suit.

If you have any questions about what attire is appropriate for your firm, find someone within the company or industry that has been successful and dress like that person, but do not be afraid to incorporate your own style. Mirroring the attire of someone that has been successful in the firm or industry will give you an idea of what type of attire is acceptable.

In investment banking, the attire tends to be very professional, and the typical business attire comes to mind. For example, suits tend to be black, gray, or navy. The suite may be pinstripe or a plaid pattern. For women, knee length shirts with a nice blouse or pants with a matching jacket. Typically, a pump that is not too high, such as two to three inches. You want to look professional but not stand out from the crowd. If you are a female in a male dominated field, you will stand out without trying so always make sure you present yourself as a professional, so you are taken seriously.

Your hair should be clean and well kept. Try not to have trendy hair styles or unnatural coloring. If you are a male, a clean haircut and well-groomed facial hair are a must. In addition, your accessories should be kept to a minimum. Try not to wear anything that will be distracting. Be sure to have a black or brown padfolio ready to take notes. If you are carrying a purse, a simple tote will do the trick.

There are options for all budgets. When buying something that is fast fashion, consider going with the option that will last for many years and will not go out of style quickly. Either a plain tailored suit or a professional sports jacket will do the trick for men. The dress shirt should be white, light blue, or another natural color that compliments your skin tone. If you are going to wear a tie, choose a classic tie and do not opt for trendy patterns. For a woman, typically, a little black dress with a black jacket for example.

As you progress in your career, you can replace your beginning suits for something of higher quality as needed.
